Document storage could be useful as economy expands

British firms might find that document storage becomes useful as they expand with the economy.

British firms might be wise to look towards document storage and digital mailroom solutions in an effort to future proof themselves against expansion.

According to the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC), there could be skills shortages in the next 12 months as the economy begins to grow.

As such, businesses might wish to ensure they are on top of their document scanning and other administration tasks in order to allow staff to focus on growing the company and ensuring workers have the knowledge required to help it progress.

Having documents stored online or digitally might also help when introducing new members of the team to the company’s policies.

REC chief executive Kevin Green pointed out that firms might turn to foreign workers if there are not enough skilled specialists available in the UK.

"We haven’t fundamentally, as an economy, tackled the issue of getting our young people to have the right type of skills and employability and there are lots of issues with people not studying STEM [science, technology, engineering and mathematics] subjects and coming out with the right type of qualifications," he said.

"As the population ages, we will find that we struggle and immigration will become more of an issue, because across Europe we have an ageing population as well."

Even smaller businesses could benefit from storing online server backups and document scanning.

EuroCloud vice-chairman Phil Wainwright explained that cloud computing might be a smart move for small and medium-sized enterprises.

"I think they’re very viable and I think that a lot of small businesses are now turning to online applications – particularly as a way of fulfilling their computing needs," he said.

"If you look at the market research that’s being published now, I think in particular, the ready-made cloud applications that we call SaaS (software as a service) are certainly becoming a big element of choice for small businesses to quickly and cost effectively fulfil computing needs that they find emerging.
