Get worker buy-in when cutting paper usage

Businesses may initially invest in disaster recovery services, such as offsite backup storage, in order to minimise the risk of losing valuable data, but there are also environmental benefits associated with having information stored digitally rather than on paper. These advantages could be enhanced by getting the buy-in of employees, who can help to cut the amount of paper being used in offices and around a firm’s premises.

According to Ecolibris.net, firms also have to consider how a move into the digital world might impact their customers. Co-founder Raz Godelnik noted that it is essential to discuss whether moving services online is going to be a smart move. He said: “I think it’s important to be prepared when you approach customers. For example, a lot of companies are moving to e-billing and you need to make sure that you’re really prepared for this transfer and make sure that it goes smoothly.

“If you are looking to move into e-billing and other steps that concern your customers, make sure that your operational infrastructure is ready.”

Mr Godelnik added that it may be wise to encourage workers to improve their own environmental behaviour: “Other advice might be to provide some incentives to employees who try to save paper. Many times you see companies that save a lot of money but they save a lot of money because the employees are taking these steps.

“It’s good if you can share these savings, whether it’s through bonuses or launching some sort of competition between teams. It doesn’t have to be a lot of money but companies have to provide some sort of incentive to make sure that employees feel like they’re part not just of the effort but also part of the results in terms of generating savings.”
