Business Continuity Planning

What is Business Continuity planning?

The primary purpose of a BCP is to ensure the continuance of critical functions in the event of an incident. It addresses the needs of all aspects of your business or organisation and it is used to accomplish the following in a timely and efficient manner:

  • Prevention
  • Processes and policies that seek to keep a negative incident from occurring. An example of preventative measures is the policy of backing up company data to a remote server that also has redundant backup systems. Prevention strategies are enacted before a disaster or emergency occurs.

  • Continuity
  • Processes and policies that provide actions that restore and protect critical functions during the disaster or emergency event. An example of continuity actions is the relocation of your company to a temporary work site.

  • Disaster Recovery
  • This term has two meanings. The traditional meaning refers to the processes and policies associated with returning your business or organisation to normal operations after a disruptive incident. The modern, technology driven age sometimes use this term to mean the restoration of IT and technology systems to their normal functions by recalling back-up data, redundant systems, etc.
